An old Ann Landers column describes a 79-year-old grandfather’s Christmas wish. His 80th birthday was on Christmas Eve. He has gotten cards from all of the children, of course, but now he is looking forward to seeing them. He puts on his Sunday best to look nice when they come. He skips his daily coffee at the cafe with his golf buddies to be sure he’s home when they come.He misses his afternoon nap and stays near the phone so he can answer it when they call. He is proud of his 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Two sons and a daughter live within 10 miles of his home; the other 2 within a 30-minute’s drive.
He realizes they all lead busy lives, but today is his birthday … and Christmas Eve. He’s sure they will come! By dinnertime his youngest son and daughter-in-law visit with two of his grandchildren. He is thrilled, but holds off cutting the cake, fully expecting the rest of the family to come. Eventually his youngest son and family must leave, so they enjoy some of the cake — but leave the rest out for everyone else to enjoy. He waits and waits. By 10:30 that evening he goes to his room to prepare for bed.
Before he retires, he asks his wife of 50 years to wake him if they come. But the rest of his children don’t come. He’s still awake when his wife comes to bed. He tells her, “I know I got cards, and I know they are all so busy! And I know they will probably drop by tomorrow, on Christmas. But I really wanted to see them today, on my birthday.” He quickly hid a tear that trickled down his cheek, as his wife hugged and consoled him.
